Bay Area Beckons Huskies For Four Duals
April 12, 2017 | Beach Volleyball
SEATTLE – The Huskies head right back to California this week, traveling to the Bay Area after paying a visit to Southern California last weekend. After facing some of the top competition in the NCAA last weekend, Washington (2-4) will look to put the experience to good use and attempt to string some wins together against some more tough competition.
The first stop for the Huskies will be in Folsom, Calif. where they will take on Sacramento State for the third year in a row. First serve will be Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The Hornets are 4-7 on the season so far, winning their first three in a row before losing seven-straight before winning their last match, 3-2, vs. Boise State, reversing an earlier 0-5 loss to the Broncos.
Washington then faces three more Pac-12 opponents over a two day span. The Dawgs will play at California for the first time ever, visiting the Bears on Friday for a 2 p.m. dual. Saturday, UW pays its first visit to Stanford's home courts for a double-header, playing Oregon first at 9 a.m. and then taking on the Cardinal at 3 p.m.
California and Stanford are both "receiving votes" in the AVCA top-15 rankings. The Cardinal are essentially the 19th-ranked team and Cal is No. 20. In the DiG Magazine poll it's Cal at No. 18 and Stanford at No. 20.
The Bears are currently 10-7 overall and have played five straight 3-2 matches, winning the first two but losing their last three, including a 2-3 loss against Stanford on Tuesday. Cal and UW have three common opponents, with Cal losing 0-5 to Long Beach State and USC, and 1-4 to UCLA. Nicole Anderson and Iya Lindahl are 12-6 at the No. 4 spot and Teya Neff and Bridget Gustafson are 12-6 at No. 5. Washington won the first meeting between the teams last year in the Pac-12 tournament.
Oregon is one of the few teams with fewer matches played than the Huskies, as the Ducks are 1-3 with all four matches decided by one point. Oregon lost twice to Portland in early March, then had a month off before playing again, getting a win over Sacramento State, 3-2, before losing 2-3 to Boise State last week. Washington beat Oregon 3-2 in Seattle last season.
Stanford is now 10-4 on the year and will play Oregon and Boise State before facing the Huskies. Kathryn Plummer and Jenna Gray are the No. 1 pair for Stanford and are 8-6 on the season while Courtney Bowen and Kat Anderson are 10-4 at the bottom of the lineup. The Huskies have a 1-0 series lead on Stanford with a win in the Pac-12 tourney last year.
