TUCSON, Arizona – The University of Washington women's golf team posted a seventh-place finish at the 2017 Pac-12 Championships on Wednesday, carding a three-round score of 37-over 901 (208-292-301). The Huskies recorded their second-best round of the event during the final 18 and were led by sophomore Julianne Alvarez who registered her second top 10 finish of the season, placing tied for ninth.
"Today was tough for us," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We had a good start but just couldn't keep our momentum going. All we can do is try to learn from this and keep getting better. We're a young group and now we've got some time to regroup and get back out on the course."
Alvarez jumped two spots on the leaderboard during her final round as she carded a 1-over 73 to move her three-round total to 5-over 221 (78-70-73). After starting the tournament with a 6-over 78, Alvarez went 1-under during the final 36 holes thanks to four birdies and a very steady 29 pars. Alvarez had just three blemishes during her final two rounds en route to her top 10 effort, which is the 16th top 10 showing at the league championship in Husky history.
"It was great to see Julianne play so consistently these last two rounds," said Mulflur. "She had a tough first day but responded really well and that's the direction we want to continue to see her go. It will hopefully provide some momentum and confidence for her as we move forward."
Sophomore Wenyung Keh came in second for the Dawgs as she finished tied for 22nd with a 12-over 223 (74-75-79). Keh's final round was a tale of two nines as she went five-under to open the day but following the turn, went 12-over on the difficult back nine to finish with a 7-over 79. Keh's five birdies on the front nine tied for the best score of the day over those first nine holes.
Freshman Ellen Takada moved up six spots during Wednesday's final round as she posted a 2-over 74 for her best round of the tournament to finish tied for 33rd with a 15-over 231 (75-82-74). She responded well to her Tuesday round by coming out with an even par front nine. Takada stayed even through the next eight holes before carding a double bogey on the day's final hole to give her the 2-over 74.
Rounding out scoring was sophomore Sarah Rhee who finished tied for 39th. She went 3-over 75 during the final 18 holes en route to her 16-over 232 (83-84-85). Thee also opened the day strong, going 2-under through the first seven holes but blemishes on five holes down the stretch moved her score to 3-over. Additionally, freshman Karen Miyamoto finished in a tie for 44th at 18-over 234 (81-73-80).
The Huskies will now wait to see if they are selected to advance to an NCAA Regional. The selection show will air on the Golf Channel at 8 a.m. PT on Thursday, April 27. Additionally, the Pac-12 championship will be aired on Pac-12 Networks in a tape delayed, one-hour special debuting on Tuesday, May 2 at 4:30 p.m. PT/5:30 p.m. MT across all seven networks.
