April 20, 2017 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE โ Set to close out the regular season, the Washington women's tennis team will travel to Pullman, Wash. this weekend to face the Cougars on Saturday April 22nd at noon.
The Huskies (15-8, 4-5 Pac-12) will look to finish their 2017 schedule with a victory, after dropping two matches at home to Cal and Stanford this past weekend. Falling 0-7 to the Golden Bears on Friday, the team lost to Stanford 1-6 with Stacey Fung picking up a point for the Dawgs with a win over No. 54 Caroline Doyle. This was the sophomore's third consecutive weekend with a win over an ITA-Ranked opponent, and helped push her to a new career-high ranking this past week at 32nd in the country.
Now with 22 singles wins on the season, Fung is joined by teammates Kenadi Hance and Katarina Kopcalic in the 20-win club. This is the most student-athletes with 20 or more singles wins on a team since the 2008-09 season when there were five. Fung has also become the first Husky to post back-to-back seasons with 20 or more singles wins since Venise Chan and Denise Dy did it between the 2009-2011 seasons.
Washington State will enter Saturday's match with a 10-14 record on the year, having gone 0-9 in conference play. Last weekend they took down Santa Clara on the road 4-0 before falling to Stanford on Friday and Cal on Saturday. In her 14th season with the program, head coach Lisa Hart's team has been led on the court by freshman Melisa Ates, who owns the most singles wins on the team with a 22-13 record. Saturday's match will also mark the end of the regular season for the Cougars as well.
