April 22, 2017 | Women's Tennis
PULLMAN, Wash. – To close out their 2017 regular season the Washington women's tennis team picked up a 4-0 victory over rival Washington State today at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
"Really proud of the team today up and down the line," said head coach Robin Stephenson. "Different people stepped up and contributed to this win."
To begin the match, the Huskies claimed the first doubles match on court one, with Miki Kobayashi and Alexis Prokopuik defeating Victoria Matejevic and Aneta Miksovska 6-2. The Cougars came out on top of the match on court two, but to clinch the doubles point Lana Slavica and Katarina Kopcalic won a tough 7-5 tie-break to give the Dawgs a 1-0 lead.
"The energy we brought in practice yesterday was amazing," said Slavica. "We knew what we came for, we were very determined, and we found our way to finish strong today."
While singles began close, with each team picking up first set victories on three courts, the Huskies were the first to strike. On court four Kenadi Hance defeated Matejevic 6-2, 6-0 for her 17th dual match win on the season, and 22nd total, to give UW a 2-0 advantage. Kobayashi extended UW's lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Barbora Michalkova on court two, claiming her 17th dual match win of the season as well.
"The girls showed a lot of poise and maturity and took care of business," said Stephenson.
On court six, the Huskies clinched the dual match victory over Washington State, with a 6-2, 6-2 win by Kopcalic. The freshman moved to 21-10 on the season with the victory, and ends the dual match season with 15 singles wins.
"I think we did a good job carrying energy into singles," said Kopcalic. "We all just took care of business and shut them down which we knew we could do if we just stayed focused. I'm really proud of how we dealt with the wind and the different conditions out here too."
Closing out the season with a 16-8 record, the team now looks forward to the postseason, with the Pac-12 Championships beginning next Wednesday April 26th in Ojai, Calif.
"We finished out our regular season strong and are looking forward to making a run in the post season," said Stephenson.
