UW Advances At Pac-12 Championship With Win Over Colorado
April 26, 2017 | Women's Tennis
OJAI, Calif. – The Washington women's tennis team picked up a 4-0 win over Colorado today in the first ever Pac-12 women's tennis team championships at the Weil Tennis Academy.
"We're happy to get this win today to advance in the tournament," said head coach Robin Stephenson. "We knew Colorado would compete hard today and they did a good job and pushed us at every spot."
To begin the match the Huskies claimed the first doubles match to finish on court one, as Miki Kobayashi and Alexis Prokopuik defeated Louise Ronaldson and Chloe Hule 6-2. After Utah evened the doubles up with a win on court three, the sophomore duo of Stacey Fung and Kenadi Hance won a tough tie-breaker 7-2 to put the Dawgs on the board and take an early 1-0 lead.
The Huskies were able to carry the momentum over into singles, picking up first set victories on four courts. Prokopuik was the first to finish her match, defeating Hule on court five 6-3, 6-3 for her 20th singles win of the season.
"We had a lot of fun out there today and really enjoyed ourselves," said Prokopuik. "We were resilient and stayed disciplined through the entire match."
After her doubles partner picked up the victory, Kobayashi followed suit shortly after on court two, winning her match 6-2, 6-4 to put the Dawgs up 3-0. The junior from Nagano, Japan also tallied her 20th singles win of the season, becoming the fifth Husky to reach that mark. Washington's five 20-match winners this year matches the program-high, which was set during the 2008-09 season.
"We were all prepared for a battle and we wanted the win more than anything," said Kobayashi. "We did a good job today of taking care of business."
To clinch the match, senior Nour Abbes won a tough match against Annabelle Andrinopoulos 6-4, 7-5 to give UW their 17th win of the season, and advance the Dawgs to the next round of the tournament.
"Winning as a group is a very unique feeling and I'm beyond proud of the team today," said Abbes. "These are the moments we play for and I can't wait to go back out there tomorrow and enjoy another day of competition alongside these amazing people."
The Huskies will be back at it tomorrow, with a matchup against the tournament's two seed California at 3 p.m. at the Weil Tennis Academy. The Golden Bears currently rank 16th in the country nationally and received a first round bye.
"This team plays with so much passion and heart and we are excited for a big opportunity tomorrow," said Stephenson.
