Huskies Knock Off Ducks And Cardinal In The Bay
April 15, 2017 | Beach Volleyball
STANFORD, Calif. – Washington beach volleyball picked up its best win of the season thus far today with a 3-2 victory over the Stanford Cardinal, a team receiving votes in the AVCA top-20. That came on the heels of a 5-0 sweep over Oregon to wrap up a solid 3-1 road trip for the Dawgs.
Washington evened its record at 5-5 on the season while snapping a five-match win streak for Stanford (12-5). The Huskies will now wrap up the regular season with its only two home matches, next Saturday and Sunday at Alki Beach against Boise State.
Vs. Oregon
Washington won all five first sets against the Ducks. Oregon then pulled out three extended second sets to make the Dawgs work, but UW answered in all three third sets to help secure the 5-0 sweep.
The first three setter came at the No. 5 spot, where Anna Crabtree and Lindsay Chalmers shook off a 22-24 second set loss to defeat Ronika Stone and Maggie Scott, 21-16, 22-24, 15-10. A dominant win at No. 4 from Shayne McPherson and Melanie Wade, winning 21-5, 21-7, made it 2-0 Dawgs.
The Dawgs switched up their lineup at the second and third spots against the Ducks, putting Cassie Strickland and Carly DeHoog together for the first time at the No. 3 spot. The Dawgs won the first set, 21-14, against Johnson/Silberger-Franek, before Oregon stayed alive with a 24-22 second set win. But DeHoog and Strickland picked it back up to win the third, 15-11, and clinch the dual at 3-0.
Courtney Schwan and Destiny Julye teamed up for the second time this season at the No. 2 spot. Once again Oregon won a long second set, but the Dawgs won out in three, beating August Raskie and Taylor Agost, 21-18, 22-24, 15-11.
Crissy Jones and Tia Scambray then polished off the sweep with a straight set win at the top spot, beating Lindsey Vander Weide and Brooke Van Sickle, 21-11, 21-17.
Vs. Stanford
The Nos. 4 and 5 matches were first up and they set the tone for what would be a very tight match throughout. Stanford took both first sets, but the Huskies rallied to take both second sets and force deciding thirds.
Crabtree and Chalmers came up a few points short in the third set at the No. 5 spot to Bowen/Anderson as the Cardinal struck first, 21-17, 19-21, 15-9. But then Wade and McPherson came up with the huge win at No. 4 to keep the Huskies from going down 0-2. After dropping the first set to Stanford's Raquel/Richardson, the Husky tandem took the second set, 21-17, and held on in a third-set battle, 16-14, for the win.
The top three matches all went on court at once. At the No. 1 spot, Jones and Scambray kept on rolling, taking down Stanford's top pair of Kathryn Plummer and Jenna Gray, 21-17, 21-12. Jones and Scambray went 4-0 this week without dropping a set at the No. 1 spot, and are now 8-1 on the season together. Their victory gave the Huskies a 2-1 edge.
Washington also pulled out close first sets at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots, but Stanford would force thirds on both courts.
The clinching point would come from DeHoog and Strickland at No. 3. After taking the first set against Hentz/Keefe, they let the second set slip, 16-21, but in the third set the Huskies took a 10-6 lead and then won five of the final seven points to finish it off, 15-8.
The final match was Schwan and Julye at No. 2 against Vanjak/Chang of Stanford. The Huskies took the first set, 22-20, and had their chances to close it out in two, but Stanford stayed alive with a 26-24 victory. The Cardinal used that momentum to take a 7-1 lead in the third. The Huskies forced a timeout down 8-10, but Stanford came back and won the final five points for the 15-8 win.
