SEATTLE – The Husky beach volleyball team is getting in on the action on campus this Saturday, moving the start time and location of its dual match with Boise State to the new Husky Beach Courts, with a new start time of 11 a.m. Sunday's rematch with the Broncos will remain at Alki Beach, also starting at 11 a.m.
Construction of two new sand volleyball courts was completed at the end of March, giving UW a new home to train and now to compete. The courts are located just off Montlake Avenue, adjacent to the Intramural Activities Building (IMA) on the north side. Fans who come to watch on Saturday are encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets.
Saturday also features a major crew race for Washington against California starting at 9 a.m. and the Husky Football Fanfest and Spring Preview will be taking place that morning, with the Spring Preview starting officially at 12 noon in Husky Stadium.
"With the crew race and spring football event in the afternoon we wanted to capitalize on having a lot of Husky fans around campus," said Husky Head Coach Jonathan Winder. "It's a neat opportunity to share with more fans who may not know yet that we have a beach volleyball team; it's a great sport in the Pac-12 and NCAA and we have a really good, hardworking team."
This weekend will be UW's first and only home matches of the year, and also the final matches of the regular season. The Dawgs are currently 5-5 on the year with the Pac-12 Championships coming up next week in Tucson, Ariz.
Washington has won four of its past five matches, including a big 3-2 win at Stanford in its most recent match. Juniors Tia Scambray and Crissy Jones were named Pac-12 Pair of the Week this week, the first time UW has won that honor in the two years it has been awarded. Scambray and Jones are 8-1 at the No. 1 spot for the Huskies this year.
"After Cal we adjusted to what the level is like," says Winder. "Stanford has five good pairs. Shayne (McPherson) and Mel (Wade) in particular, it was awesome for them to start us off with a very close win, and Anna (Crabtree) and Lindsey (Chalmers) were in a battle too, so all our teams it was the best they had competed. There were four three-set matches and it could have gone either way and I'm glad we came out on top."
Boise State was also in the Bay Area last weekend competing against the same three Pac-12 schools that the Huskies faced. The Broncos had a 4-1 win over Oregon, then a 3-2 loss to California and a 4-1 loss against Stanford. Boise State now has a 5-4 record on the season.
"It's going to be a great event to play on the new courts that UW has built. Boise State is a really good team, so it's going to be a fun challenge," says Winder.
