Washington Gives Up Only One Run, Defeats Penn State In Five Innings

SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Washington softball team put 13 runs on the board in the first three innings Wednesday night for a five-inning, 13-1 win over Penn State at Logan field.
The team totaled five runs in the second inning and seven in the third during their five-inning route. Trysten Melhart, Casey Stangel and Maggie Gallagher each had two hits and Stangel had four RBIs.
Freshman Samantha Manti (3-0) tossed three scoreless innings to remain perfect on the season, giving up only two hits in three innings. Kristin Cochran came in as relief in the fourth inning and allowed four hits and one run. The pair each struck out three batters.
The Huskies took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Lead-off hitter Melhart was issued a walk from Penn State started Madison Seifert (3-6) and immediately stole second. She was plated off a single from Ali Aguilar.
In the second inning, the Huskies batted around sending nine batters to the plate. Gallagher got on base with a double and was sent home off a single from Melhart. Stangel followed suit and doubled to bring in Melhart and Morganne Flores, who was previously walked. Taylor Van Zee capped off the inning with a two-run RBI single to make the score 6-0.
The Huskies continued their offensive barrage in the third, sending 12 batters to the plate and tacking on seven more runs. Stangel and Flores each drove in two runs on singles. The Huskies scored three more runs on a bases loaded walk to Aguilar, a throwing error and a fielder's choice from Julia DePonte.
The only run for Penn State came off an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Huskies will return to Montlake for the first time in the 2017 season when they host Penn State for their second game of the series on Thursday, March 9 at 5 p.m. Admission is free and seating will be on a first come, first serve basis.
