Huskies Win Home Opener In Five Innings
March 09, 2017 | Softball
SEATTLE, Wash. – After battling the rain for nearly four hours, No. 8 Washington put a run on the board in each inning to shut down Penn State Thursday night, run-ruling them, 9-1, in five innings during their season home opener.
A fifth inning walk-off two run double from freshman Sis Bates sent Husky fans home happy and finished off Washington's victory. The team totaled 11 hits on the night with two each from Bates, Casey Stangel and Morganne Flores.
Stangel's solo home run in the bottom of the first gave the Huskies (17-3) an early lead at Husky Softball Stadium. Penn State (8-12) mounted a threat in the bottom of the frame, but were only able to put one run on the board off an RBI single and tie the game at 1-1.
Julia DePonte, the lead-off hitter for Washington in the second inning, was issued a walk from Penn State starter Jessica Cummings (1-3) and was plated on a single from Maggie Gallagher to give the Huskies the lead for good. Kirstyn Thomas, who reached first on a fielder's choice, advanced home after a single from Kelly Burdick to make the score 3-1.
In the third inning, Stangel led-off with a single and crossed home plate after a double by Taylor Van Zee and an error by the Penn State shortstop. Van Zee and DePonte, who reached first on an error, were plated after a single from Flores.
In the middle of the third inning the team had to take a brief 15 minute break for the rain to clear. Once the game resumed, the Huskies took advantage of their lead and tacked on one more run in the fourth and two in the fifth to end the ballgame.
Bates doubled in the fourth inning and was sent home after a single from DePonte. The freshman then stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning with bases loaded and doubled deep into centerfield sending home two runners.
Junior Madi Schreyer (4-2) pitched a complete game for the Huskies, allowing only one run and five hits.
The Huskies will return to action on Friday in the opening day of the Husky Classic for a top-ten match-up against No. 7 Minnesota at 3:45 p.m. PT followed by a game against Penn State at 6 p.m. PT.
