Singles Guide UW To 4-1 Win Over San Diego
March 09, 2017 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – Returning home to the Nordstrom Tennis Center this week, the Washington men's tennis team grabbed a solid 4-1 win over San Diego today.
The Dawgs began the match by winning court two in doubles, as Jake Douglas and Piers Foley picked up a 6-2 win. On court one, San Diego evened doubles up at 1-1 with a win before taking court three in a tough victory 7-5.
"We've had a few matches like this," said head coach Matt Anger. "Where we've been unhappy with how the doubles come out but where we've come out and played strong on all six courts."
Down 1-0, Washington battled back well across the board, winning the first set on each court to begin singles. Freshman Amit Batta was first to finish his match, picking up his 10th singles win to move to 10-0 during dual matches, and draw the match score even at 1-1. On courts three and four, Gal Hakak and Douglas finished simultaneously, with the senior winning 6-0, 6-3 and Douglas grabbing a 6-2, 6-2 victory to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead.
In all three matches remaining in play, UW held leads in the second set. The first to finish, and clinch the weekday win for the Dawgs was Enzo Sommer, defeating Josh Page 6-3, 6-4 to bring the dual match score to 4-1. Both Mitch Stewart and Foley held leads on their courts, but the matches were halted with the victory for Washington already clinched.
"To get all six first sets and to be up on each court against a solid team showed we're pretty good throughout," said Anger. "But I think it's pretty clear we have to get better with our doubles to give us a chance down the road, especially when we get into Pac-12 play."
Washington will take next weekend off before making the trip down to Honolulu, Hawai'i for a consecutive Thursday match on March 23rd when they face Hawai'i before taking on Fresno State on Saturday the 25th.
