Huskies Fall In Close Match With Drake
March 04, 2017 | Men's Tennis
MINNEAPOLIS – The Washington men's tennis team turned up on the wrong side of a close match today, falling to Drake 4-3 at the Baseline Tennis Center.
"This match isn't sitting well with me," said head coach Matt Anger. "Personally, we had plenty of opportunities, and this match looks totally different if we take advantage of just half of them."
The Huskies opened up doubles with a win on court three, as freshman Amit Batta and senior Gal Hakak defeated Ben Clark and Ben Stride 6-2. On courts one and two, each match remained tight, but Drake would go on to win tie-breakers on each court to claim the doubles point for an early 1-0 lead.
Drake took a 2-0 advantage by claiming the first court in singles, with No. 55 Vinny Gillespie defeating Mitch Stewart 6-3, 6-2. Jake Douglas took a point back for the Dawgs on court three with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Barny Thorold before Enzo Sommer fell on court two to bring the score to 3-1.
Fighting back, Washington brought the score closer thanks to a tough three-set win by Piers Foley on court six 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. After dropping his first set 6-3, Batta came back in the second 6-4 to force a third, which he won 7-6 to bring the dual match even at 3-3. On court four, Hakak came out on top of a tough second set 7-5 after losing the first, but was unable to pick up the third, giving Drake the 4-3 win.
The Huskies will return home next week to host San Diego in the Nordstrom Tennis Center for a weekday match on Thursday March 9th at 4 p.m.
