SEATTLE – After completing their non-conference schedule with an 11-4 record the No. 32 Washington men's tennis team begins Pac-12 play this weekend, taking on No. 10 UCLA on Friday March 31st at 3 p.m., and No. 5 USC Saturday April 1st at 1 p.m.
The Huskies traveled to Honolulu last weekend to close out their non-conference schedule, defeating Hawai'i 6-1 before following it up with another 6-1 victory over Fresno State. Freshman Amit Batta remained undefeated through the dual match season in singles, and picked up his team leading 17th win last Saturday against the Bulldogs. Mitch Stewart and Enzo Sommer continue to lead the charge for the Dawgs this season, combining to go 10-4 on court one in singles.
While Friday's match at the Los Angeles Tennis Center will officially mark the beginning of conference play for both teams, UCLA has technically faced three Pac-12 opponents across four matches this year in various tournaments, going 2-2. The 10th ranked team in the nation is guided by head coach Billy Martin in his 24th season, and led on the court by senior Gage Brymer. The Irvine, Calif. native currently owns the 11th spot in the latest ITA Singles Rankings, and owns an 18-8 record on the year, going 7-4 in dual match play. The Bruins and Huskies will enter Friday's match with identical 11-4 records, after UCLA defeated UC Irvine 7-0 on March 29th.
For the second time this season the Washington Huskies will matchup against the fifth-ranked team in the country, when they take on USC Saturday. While the Trojans currently own a 17-3 record, they will take on Oregon Friday before hosting UW. In his 15th season at the helm, head coach Peter Smith's team currently owns two ITA singles rankings, and two rankings in doubles. Freshman Brandon Holt has come on strong for USC, sitting at 21st in the ITA Singles Rankings, and owning a 28-7 record. Going 12-2 in dual matches this year, Holt also owns a doubles ranking paired with Logan Smith, most recently ranked 20th in the country.
