BATON ROGUE, La. – Following 36 holes at the LSU Tiger Classic, the University of Washington Women's Golf team sits in seventh place with an 18-over 599 (293-306). Sophomore Julianne Alvarez is leading the Dawgs as she is tied for second at 4-under 140 (70-70). The 56-hole tournament will take a break due to impending weather on Saturday and resume with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday, March 26 at the University Club Course on the campus of Louisiana State.
"We played pretty well this morning which I was proud of considering we hadn't played in almost a full month," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "There's going to be some rust when you have that long of a break but I was impressed with how they came out. We could have been better, but I like the direction that we're moving in."
Alvarez was one of two players on Friday to post back-to-back under-par rounds on the par-72 course as she stayed consistent with scores of 2-under 70. She posted 10 birdies on the day en route to her finish which is five strokes off the lead at 4-under 140. Duke's Leona Maguire currently holds the top spot at 9-under 135.
"It was really good to see Julianne have a solid day," added Mulflur. "She never wavered, even with the course playing harder over the second round. She battled, stayed focused and just had a really, really solid 36 holes so we're excited to see her get back out there on Sunday."
Sophomore Wenyung Keh also rests in the top 25 as she is tied for 22nd at 5-over 149. Keh opened the day with a 2-over 74 and followed that round with two birdies en route to a 3-over 75. The sophomore was followed by freshman Karen Miyamoto who is tied for 53rd at 11-over 155 (75-80).
"Wenyung is starting to play better and was very consistent out there," said Mulflur. "She wasn't as sharp as she usually is with her short game but she still showed maturity in her response to the results. Karen is so good, she just needs to relax a little bit. She had a lot of poise out there despite a few hiccups but she battled and hung in there.
UW's scoring contingent is rounded out by sophomore Sarah Rhee who also knocked in an 11-over 155 (74-81) to tie for 53rd and freshman Ellen Takada who sits at 86th with a 22-over 166. Freshman Christina Wang, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 53rd as well at 11-over 155.
The final 18 holes will tee off at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 26.
