March 22, 2017 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – After nearly two weeks off the Washington women's tennis team will be back at it this Friday, traveling to Salt Lake City, Utah to face the Utes on March 24th at 12:30 p.m., before taking on Colorado in Boulder, Colo. on Sunday at 10 a.m.
The Huskies opened up their Pac-12 schedule on March 10th, hosting Oregon for a televised match at Bill Quillian Stadium. Battling back to tie the score at 3-3, UW would fall in an incredibly tight match on court one to drop their conference opener 4-3. However, the Dawgs have been a strong team this season, currently ranked 38th in the nation, owning an 11-4 record, two singles rankings and a doubles ranking by the ITA.
Junior Miki Kobayashi currently ranks 111th in singles, a career high, and 39th in doubles with Nour Abbes. The Nagano, Japan native owns a singles record of 11-3 in dual match play, and has defeated two ranked opponents including No. 54 Aliona Bolsova against No. 11 Oklahoma State. Paired with Abbes in doubles, the duo has taken down two top-10 ranked opponents this year, most recently defeating the ninth ranked team in a 5-2 win over Northwestern.
On Friday the Huskies will take on head coach Mat Iandolo's 4-6 Utes, who will face Houston the day before. Utah was last in action March 10th-13th, opening their Pac-12 schedule with a 0-4 loss to Arizona State before bouncing back with a 4-3 win over Arizona, then hosting North Carolina State and dropping that match 4-3. The team has been led by junior Margo Pletcher who owns a 4-4 singles record, but most recently upset No. 34 Martina Frantova of NC State.
Following their match on Friday the Huskies will travel to Boulder, Colo. to face the 8-5 Buffaloes who were last in action March 10th and 11th, dropping their conference openers to Arizona and Arizona State 0-4. Led by head coach Nicole Kenneally in her 18th season, Colorado will take on Washington State on Friday before squaring off against UW. Senior Nuria Ormeno Ruiz has guided the team on the court this season, owning a 16-9 record with a 7-5 record in dual matches on court one.
