Huskies Defeat Utah on the Road 4-0

SALT LAKE CITY – In their first match back in almost two weeks, the Washington women's tennis team defeated Utah 4-0 at the Eccles Tennis Center for their first Pac-12 victory of the season.

"It's great to get our first conference win," said head coach Robin Stephenson. "There are no easy matches in the Pac-12 and the team did a great job battling some adversity today to come out on top. It was our first match in a couple of weeks and we were happy to be back out there competing and getting the win."

The Huskies opened the match by grabbing leads on two of three courts in doubles, with Stacey Fung and Kenadi Hance closing out their match first on court two with a 6-1 win. Facing Margo Pletcher and Brianna Turley on court one, Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi clinched the doubles point for the Dawgs with a 6-3 win to give UW an early 1-0 lead.

In singles the Dawgs began by taking the first set on five of the six courts. Just as they did in doubles, Fung and Hance were first to close out their matches on courts one and five, giving UW a quick 3-0 lead. Fung's victory on court one was her 10th at the top position on the season, while Hance moved to 14-2 in dual matches this year.

To clinch the win for the Huskies, junior Alexis Prokopuik defeated Jena Chuna in a three-setter on court four, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Abbes, Kobayashi and Kopcalic's matches went unfinished.

"Going in I knew that the altitude conditions were going to be uncomfortable for the team but we did a great job of adapting and handling the adversities on the court today," said Prokopuik. "I knew that we needed a final point to finish the match and everyone was in close third sets so I just stepped up and decided that I needed to bring my attitude and energy up to close the match out."

Washington will travel to Boulder, Colo. to take on the Buffaloes this Sunday March 26th at 10 a.m.
