Huskies Pick Up Second Pac-12 Win Over Colorado
March 26, 2017 | Women's Tennis
BOULDER, Colo. – The Washington women's tennis team closed out a successful road trip this weekend, earning their second Pac-12 victory with a 5-2 win over Colorado at the Meadows Club today.
"I'm really happy with the win today and going 2-0 this weekend," said head coach Robin Stephenson. "Colorado played a great match and we had to be tough out there on every court."
Just as they did against Utah on Friday, Stacey Fung and Kenadi Hance opened up today's match with a 6-1 victory in doubles on court two. The 39th ranked team of Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi sealed the doubles point for the Huskies, defeating Chloe Hule and Louise Ronaldson on court one 6-3.
"Really pleased with our doubles for the most part this weekend," said Stephenson. "We had different people step up this weekend and it was a complete team effort to get both of these wins."
Following the doubles matches, rain began to fall at the South Campus Tennis Complex, forcing the match to be moved indoors.
After the delay to move indoors, the Buffaloes gained a point back to tie the match at 1-1 in singles, as Nour Abbes fell on court two. However, Alexis Prokopuik put the Dawgs back on top with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Hule on court four, with Kobayashi defeating Annabelle Andrinopoulos 6-4, 6-4 to bring the dual match score to 3-1 Washington.
Picking up her 17th singles victory of the year, freshman Katarina Kopcalic clinched the victory for the Huskies with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Brigitte Beck on court six.
"I'm really happy with the energy we had today and how we all competed," said Kopcalic. "I wasn't sure how my opponent was going to react when we went indoors but I just focused on what I had to do and I'm glad I was able to get the win today."
The remaining two singles matches were played out, each of which went to third sets. On court one Fung picked up her 18th victory this year after bouncing back from a 6-1 loss in the second set to defeat Nuria Ormeno-Ruiz 6-3, 1-6, 7-6. Sitting at 6-6 in her third set as well, Hance narrowly fell in a close match with Kyra Wojcik to bring the final score to 5-2 Washington.
"It was a good day for the Dawgs," said Fung. "This is definitely a match to be proud of and take confidence from."
The Huskies return home next weekend, hosting UCLA on Friday March 31st for their second televised match of the season, before hosting USC on Sunday April 2nd.
