Pereira Wins Querencia Collegiate; Huskies Finish Tied For Third
February 28, 2017 | Men's Golf
QUERENCIA, Mexico -- Senior Corey Pereira earned his fourth career win, carding back-to-back 4-under par performances to claim medalist honors at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate Tuesday at the Querencia Golf Club. As a team, the Huskies finished tied for third in the 15-team field.
"This was a really great tournament by our team," head coach Alan Murray said. "They have been working really hard and are improving everyday. It was the strongest field we had played all year and we will take heart from the fact we beat a lot of really good teams. We still have room to improve but this week has only whetted our appetite for more. I want to commend the job our assistant Michael Wilson did this week. He helps our players out a lot during rounds and provides good energy within the team environment."
The win was also the first medalist showing of the season for the Cameron Park, Calif. native who topped the field twice as a junior, winning the Husky Invitational and the Gifford Collegiate and once as a sophomore, tying for the individual title at the Lampkin San Diego Invitational.
"Corey is just continuing to get better and better," Murray said. "Today was a really superb round of golf for him after starting bogey bogey and we are so proud of him. He won against one of the strongest fields in college golf."
After shooting 1-under 70 on the opening day of play, Pereira carded a 4-under 67 on back-to-back days as his 9-under 204 edged out four competitors who tied for second. The senior shot an eagle on the par 5 ninth hole and recorded five birdies on the final day of play.
On the team leaderboard, Washington (282-286-277=845) ended the tournament at 7-under par to finish 22 shots back of team champion Oklahoma State (-29) and 12 strokes back of second-place finishers Baylor (-19). The Huskies tied with Wake Forest for its second third place finish of the season.
Freshman Henry Lee also had a stellar day, carding a 4-under 67 and improving his score by nine strokes from yesterday. The rookie also carded five birdies in the final day of action.
"Henry also had an excellent round," Murray said. "He has been threatening to do that for a while now and he should get some huge confidence from that."
Sophomore Carl Yuan shot a 1-under 70 and similar to yesterday, had four birdies on the day, upping his total to 13 in the tournament. Yuan tied for 18th overall.
"Carl was his usual steady self and always seems to find a way to bounce back after a slow start," Murray said. "He is a very important player for us."
Freshman Sam Warkentin carded a 6-over 77, tying for 50th while senior Kevin Kwon shot a 2-over 73 to finish in 64th.
"Kevin played arguably our most impressive round after opening with a triple bogey," Murray said. "He fought and scrapped his way to 2 over and showed so much guts today. Sam just had a tough day but he took another step forward and was a big contributor again."
