MORAGA, Calif. – In their second match of the weekend and 10th of the season, the Washington women's tennis team defeated San Diego State 7-0 at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex to bring their record to 8-2.
"I'm really pleased with our weekend overall and getting two wins on the road," said head coach Robin Stephenson. "The girls have done an unbelievable job the past month and a half with all of the travel and going from indoor to outdoor courts."
On court three, Kenadi Hance and Alexis Prokopuik took the first doubles match of the day with a 6-2 win over Mia Smith and Alli Valk. SDSU drew the doubles even with a win on court two but Stacey Fung and Miki Kobayashi were able to grab UW a 1-0 lead with a 6-1 win.
"I think we did well sticking to our plan in doubles and being aggressive on every single shot," said Kobayashi.
In singles, Hance gave the Dawgs their second point of the match with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win on court five, while freshman Katarina Kopcalic followed suit with a 6-0, 6-0 win of her own on court six. To clinch the victory for the Huskies, senior Nour Abbes defeated Kennedy Davis on court two 6-3, 6-2 for her 10th singles win on the year.
Facing Mia Smith on court four, Prokopuik moved the score to 5-0, coming out on top of a three-setter 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Ranked 115th in the country by the ITA, the win moved Prokopuik's singles record to 8-1 in dual match play. Winning the tie-break in her first set, Fung picked up her team-leading ninth dual-match singles win on court one with a 6-3 win in the second set.
"It was a great day, starting with getting confidence off of the doubles point," said Fung. "I'm so proud of how everyone competed and how we closed out our matches."
To clinch the sweep of the Aztecs Kobayashi battled out of a tough whole after losing her first set 6-2. Winning the tie-break in her second set to force a third, the junior came out on top 10-4 to close out the action in California.
"I had some struggles during my singles match but came back and was able to finish the job," said Kobayashi. "I still have much to learn to get ready for our next match."
Washington will take the next weekend off, but return home to the Nordstrom Tennis Center on February 24th, hosting Houston on Friday before facing UC Santa Barbara on Saturday February 25th.
"We have had a very solid start to our season and now we have some time to recover and get back on the practice courts," said Stephenson. "I'm excited about how much we can improve from here and the potential for this group."
