Huskies Take Care Of Business Against Houston
February 24, 2017 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – In only their third match at home this season the Washington women's tennis team defended their court against Houston, grabbing a 5-0 victory today at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
In doubles, Houston forfeited the match on court three, putting the Huskies in position to clinch the doubles point with a single victory. On court two, Stacey Fung and Kenadi Hance teamed up for the third time this year, defeating Lauren Alter and Sveva Mazzari 6-2 to move to 3-0 on the season and give UW a quick 1-0 lead.
"We've been working a lot on doubles," said head coach Robin Stephenson. "I'm happy with some of the adjustments that we made and the way we came out and executed."
Playing together for the first time since February 3rd, Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi were locked in a close battle with Tsveta Dimitrova and Ana Glumac on court one, and headed to a tie-breaker with the score at 5-5. The Husky duo wasted no time however, winning the first four points before winning by a final score of 6-5 (7-2).
Beginning singles with a 2-0 advantage due to the Cougars forfeiting court six, Washington quickly took the first sets on four of the five courts. On court five, Hance picked up her 10th dual match win this season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Glumac.
"I knew that if I wanted to win my match I had to bring it today and zone in," said Hance. "It was easy for me today since everyone else had good energy to feed off of. Everyone was really fired up."
To clinch the win for the Huskies, Kobayashi closed out her match on court three with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Alter, while Alexis Prokopuik made it 5-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win. Fung and Abbes' matches on courts one and two respectively were suspended.
"I was impressed with the girls' focus and how they took care of business in singles," said Stephenson. "The girls have been working really hard and it's paying off. We're looking forward to a tough match tomorrow."
The 9-2 Huskies have a quick turnaround as they will take on UC Santa Barbara tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. in the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Admission to the match is free with pizza served to all in attendance between the doubles and singles matches.
