SEATTLE – Coming off of a break last weekend, the Washington women's tennis team returns to action this Friday February 24th when they host Houston at 1 p.m., followed by a matchup with UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The 8-2 Huskies were last in action in Moraga, Calif. where they defeated Saint Mary's 6-1 on February 10th, before sweeping San Diego State 7-0 the following day. Against the Aztecs, junior Alexis Prokopuik and sophomores Stacey Fung and Kenadi Hance each picked up their team-leading 14th win in singles. Moving to a top-50 team ranking system this past week, the Dawgs came in at 34th in the country in the latest ITA National Team Rankings.
Friday's match with Houston will be the fifth time these two programs have met, with the Cougars leading the series 3-1. Beginning the season 4-4, Houston is coached by Courtney Steinbock who is in her second season, and led on the court by freshman Tsveta Dimitrova. The Cougars spent last weekend in Louisiana, falling to Tulane and LSU in 1-4 matches.
On Saturday, fifth-year head coach Simon Thibodeau will bring his 4-4 Gauchos to Seattle to take on the Huskies at 11 a.m. Last weekend, UCSB picked up two wins in a doubleheader against UC Davis and Saint Mary's before suspending their match with Fresno State on Sunday due to rain. They are led by junior Palina Dubavets, who is ranked 113th in the latest ITA Singles Rankings and ranks 52nd in doubles with Stefani Stojic. On Friday, the Gauchos will take on Oregon in Eugene before facing the Huskies.
As always each match is free to attend at the Nordstrom Tennis Center, with pizza and water served to all in attendance between the doubles and singles.
