Big Second Half Dooms Huskies in 4-3 Loss at Oregon State
November 09, 2017 | Men's Soccer
The Huskies saw their three-match winning streak come to an end as they fall to 12-6-1 and end the season in third place in the conference at 5-4-1. The Beavers wrap up their season with a 7-11-0 overall mark and 4-6-0 Pac-12 record.
Washington opened the match strong as sophomore Handwalla Bwana scored a pair of goals in the first half and the Huskies dominated play throughout the first 45 minutes.
Bwana helped Washington get on the board early converting a PK in the ninth minute. Kyle Coffee received the pass from Bwana and was just onside, and worked toward the net with just the keeper to beat. Oregon State's keeper then came off his line and slid into Coffee to give the Huskies a penalty kick. Bwana stepped up to take the spot kick and calmly slotted it to the left while the keeper dove right.
Bwana had another solid chance just two minutes later after a nice give-and-go with Townsend left him an open shot from 25 yards out. His blast just went high over the bar.
The Huskies would add to their lead on a great individual effort by Bwana in the 36th minute. The sophomore gathered the ball at the top of the box and went to work on the OSU defense. He used a quick move to get around the defender, the slotted a shot to the far post to put the visitors up 2-0.
However, the Beavers came alive in the second half. Oregon State got its first goal of the match in the 50th minute as Andre Earthy-Find stepped into a hard shot from the top of the box. Kerawala made a great dive and got a hand on it, but it kept rolling and snuck in the far post.
Exactly four minutes later, Oregon State would add to its lead as Jalen Markey gathered a rebound in the box off a corner kick and sent it into the goal to knot the score at 2-2.
Less than two minutes after that, Jordan Jones blasted a shot which Kerawala got a hand on but the ball somehow managed to slip under his arm on the wet turf and find the corner.
The teams battled back and forth over the next 10 minutes but neither team had a good chance until the 70th minute when Washington ramped up the pressure. The Huskies were able to get a number of great chances in short succession including a pair of great shots by Kyle Coffee and another by Luke Hauswirth. But both were blocked or saved by the OSU netminder Ryan Vincent, who recorded five saves in the second half.
Oregon State got a big goal as Jones received pass to give him a 1v1 with Kerawala and a quick goal in the 77th minute to put the Beavers back up by two.
Just 20 seconds later, the Huskies got one back as Justin Fiddes quickly went down the left side and crossed a ball to the far post where Coffee headed it into the net to make it a one-goal game again.
However, the Huskies were not able to get the tying goal. Washington had a couple of chances with four corner kicks over the final eight minutes, but weren't able to find the equalizer.
Oregon State's first goal snapped Kerawala's shutout streak at 288:42, the longest streak of his career and his second over 235 minutes this season.
Washington now waits to hear if its record is good enough to make it into the 48-team NCAA Tournament field. The field is announced on Monday, Nov. 13 at 10:00 a.m.
