Lam And Sommer Win UCSB Doubles Title

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Highlighted by Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer teaming up to win the flight A doubles championship, Washington finished strong at the UCSB Classic on Sunday.
"This was a super tournament for us this weekend," Washington head coach Matt Anger said. "UC Santa Barbara and their coaches did a good job getting in a lot of matches. It was very beneficial for us to get started. Our guys were able to play a lot, and we will come back to our practices with extra focus."
In an intense match against a duo from Stanford, Lam and Sommer won 8-7 (1) to win the title. This pairing picked up the most wins in doubles for Washington in both 2016 and 2017.
Piers Foley made it to the championship in flight B, but a tough three-set match (6-2, 5-7, 6-3) went in favor of Fresno State's Cem Erturk.
In doubles, all three Husky duos were victorious on Sunday. In addition to Lam and Sommer's championship victory, the freshman pairing of Alexis Alvarez and Jack Davis won 8-1 to take seventh place in flight B. Foley and Sebastian Hawken also earned seventh place with a win, defeating a pair from Saint Mary's in flight C.
Three from Washington picked up wins on Sunday. Joao Barra defeated Pepperdine's Matias Sborowitz in flight A for 11th place.
Since losing his first match on Friday, freshman Davis rolled through the flight B consolation bracket, winning three straight. He won his third match on Sunday, taking down Fresno State's Henrique Osorio in three sets. Davis took ninth place in the tournament.
Kawika Lam also finished the UCSB Classic on a high note. He won his past two matches in flight C, including a win on Sunday against Daly Meinert from Cal Poly for 13th place.
In flight C, Alexis Alvarez and Sebastian Hawken both dropped their matches in two sets.
