October 08, 2017 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE -- UCLA's Matthew Powell scored four minutes into overtime as Washington lost 1-0 in a hard-fought Pac-12 match on Sunday night at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies saw their six-match winning streak come to an end and their record drop to 9-3-0 and to 2-1-0 in conference action. The Bruins win their second-straight 1-0 decision and improve to 5-5-0 and to 2-2-0 in the Pac-12.
Both teams put together quality scoring chances throughout the match with the Bruins out-shooting the Huskies 13-10.
Despite a scoreless first half, both teams had quality chances with Washington holding a slight 5-4 advantage in shots. Washington's first three shots came from distance with two forcing the UCLA netminder Kevin Silva into diving saves. The Bruins' had their first quality chance in the 31st minute as Quentin Pearson slid in to block a shot by UCLA on a breakaway.
Washington's best chance to score came in the 43rd minute. After some great passing around the top of the box, Kasey French cracked a shot from 27 yards out with the keeper making a leaping save to keep it out.
In the second half, the Bruins turned up the pressure and created a pair of early chances with one shot blocked by a Luke Hausworth making a sliding stop followed by French clearing the ball from danger with a leaping header.
In the 75th minute, UW' high pressure forced a turnover with Joey Parish making a run down the far side, then slotting a pass over to Elijah Rice. The sophomore made a quick move but the UCLA defense cleared the ball for a corner kick.
Over the final 10 minutes of regulation Washington controlled possession and nearly got on the board. In the 83rd minute, French made a pair of great moves and cracked a shot, but it was also blocked out for a corner. On the ensuing corner, the ball rattled around and came back out to Hausworth, who cracked a shot which was saved by a diving UCLA keeper.
Just 30 seconds later, Rice' pressure forced a turnover and he went on a break but his shot was also saved with a dive. He would have one final chance in regulation, taking on four UCLA defenders and somehow breaking through to the right side, but his chip to two on-rushing Husky attackers was grabbed by Silva.
In the extra session, UCLA controlled the ball much of the time and pushed forward with a great chance in the 93rd minute with Justin Fiddes making a sliding stop to give the Bruins a corner kick. But on that corner, Powell was able to get a head on a perfectly-placed kick into the middle of the box and push it to the near post for the goal.
Saif Kerawala made four saves but suffered the loss, falling to 9-3-0 on the season. Silva picked up the win while making six saves.
"It was a ragged sunday afternoon performance," said head coach Jamie Clark. "For not playing well, and still being involved in the game, I'm fairly happy we gritted it out what we did but it wasn't the best of playing performance by us today. I think in the end we weren't good enough when we won the ball and that's when we have to slow the tempo and keep the ball. We certainly never stopped working but our quality was a little lacking in this one."
