Carl Yuan To Compete In Asia-Pacific Championship

University of Washington junior Carl Yuan will compete for a spot at next year's British Open and Master's this weekend as he takes part in the 2017 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship October 26-29 at Royal Wellington Golf Club in New Zealand.
The Asia-Pacific Amateur Championshipย was created in February 2009 as a joint initiative toย developย the game by the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation, the Masters Tournament and The R&A. The prestigious field is capped at 120 of the top male amateur players. An invitation to two of golf's four majors is on the line as the winner received direct entry to the 2018 Open Championship (British Open) at Carnoustieย and the 2018 Master's Tournament while the runner-up earns an invitation to the Open Qualifying Series to the British Open.
The Championship is a 72-hole, stroke play format, with aย cut taking place after 36 holes for the leading 60 players plus ties. In the event of a tie after 72 holes, the winner is decided by a sudden-death playoff.
"We are going to miss Carl in Hawaii," said UW Head Coach Alan Murray.ย "However, this is one of the elite amateur events in the world and is very special to him. If he plays how he is capable, he will be a hard man to beat.ย We will be routing for him!"
Yuan, who's given name is Yechun, has been Washington's top golfer this season, posting a scoring average ofย 70.1 with five rounds below par includingย three rounds in the 60's and two Top 10 finishes through three events (8 rounds) this season.
Washington's men's golf team closes out the fall portion of its 2017-18 seasonย at the Warrior Wave Invitational Oct. 29-31.ย
