Gold Strikes First With 6-3 Win In Purple & Gold World Series

SEATTLE – Freshman Jonathan Schiffer collected three hits – including a pair of doubles – and drove in the go-ahead run to lead Gold to a 6-3 win over Purple in the first game of the Purple & Gold World Series at Husky Ballpark on Tuesday.
The visiting Purple team jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning on a Ben Baird run-scoring double, but the Gold team answered with a four-run second inning in which they sent nine batters to the plate. Schiffer drove in the first two runs for Gold with a double and senior KJ Brady sent him home two batters later with a RBI single. AJ Graffanino made the score 4-1 with a sacrifice fly.
In the third, Purple cut the lead to one on a RBI triple by Levi Jordan and run-scoring fielder's choice hit into by Blake Burton, but Gold responded with two more runs in their half of the third to take a three-run advantage which they held the rest of the way.
Brady drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the third and Graffanino followed with a RBI single.
Sophomore Chris Micheles struck out four over four innings of work to pick up the win for the Gold squad. Freshmen Dylan Lamb allowed one hit over two innings and Cole Galvagno slammed the door shut in the seventh to pick up the save.
Jack DeCooman gave up all six runs in 2 1/3 innings to take the loss. Channing Nesbitt (2 2/3 innings) and Alex Hardy (1 inning) had scoreless appearances for Purple out of the bullpen.
Gold outhit Purple, 11-8, led by Schiffer's three hits. Sophomore Christian Jones also had a pair of hits for Gold.
Jordan was 3-for-4 with a triple and double to pace the Purple offense. Baird and Casey Longaker each collected a pair of hits for Purple.
The Purple and Gold World Series continues with game two, Thursday at 3:20. If necessary, a third game will be played Friday, also starting at 3:20 p.m.
