Huskies Drop 3-0 Game Against #2 UCLA
October 22, 2017 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – The Washington Huskies dropped a 3-0 game to the #2 UCLA Bruins Sunday. Sarah Shimer made eight saves in the game, her third game this year with at least eight, but took the loss. Washington is 9-6-2 on the season now, falling to 2-4-2 in conference. UCLA moves to 13-1-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the Pac-12.
UCLA scored early on a long shot from the center of the pitch coming at 7'. Shimer leapt for the ball but the shot was positioned perfectly to skim into the top of the goal and make it 1-0.
Shimer's skills were on display not much later with a one-on-one situation in the 11th minute. The senior goalie rushed out to meet the attacker and smother the shot point-blank, denying a scoring chance for the Bruins.
Shimer also made two great saves in the 28th minute, leaping to grab a header then smothering a close-range shot with her body. That second save, combined with some good marking by Taylor Sekyra, allowed the Huskies to start a break, with Keever taken down after beating the defense for a free kick and yellow card.
Sianna Siemonsma was a part of all the first-half scoring chances for the Huskies, beginning with a tackle on the edge of the box at 25'. The freshman had just enough room to try and chip a pass along to Kimberly Keever in the box but unfortunately left it just a bit too far, allowing the ball to be cleared away.
In the last two minutes of the half, Siemonsma put in two crosses that led to Husky chances. The first cross found Keever in the middle of the box but was a bit too high for a shot, with Keever's foot pushing the ball parallel to the goal mouth under pressure.
After a second cross was cleared out, Keever was able to knock a pass to Simon, who volleyed a shot wide of goal.
The half ended with a 2-0 lead for the Bruins despite the late pressure by UW.
Washington's offense kept that energy up as soon as the second half began. Shannon Simon gathered the ball on the far edge of the box. The senior sent a searing ground pass to Rachel Wheeler at the mouth of goal, who was able to redirect it on goal. The shot beat the goalie but would not stay down enough, going just over the bar.
A UCLA foul just outside the box gave the Huskies a free kick in a perfect scoring position at 57'. Anissa Dadkhah took the set piece, getting her shot over the wall. Unfortunately, the ball didn't have the curve to drop back in, going over the bar.
Siemonsma was once again involved in a Washington scoring chance, this time coming in the 75th minute. Simon took a corner for the Huskies, with Siemonsma meeting the pass with her head. The shot raised high and went over the crossbar for a goal kick.
The Bruins added a late goal, taking advantage of Washington investing heavily into the attack to score one on the counterattack at 86:29.
UCLA led in the final shot count 14-5.
The Huskies will hit the road next week with two games in Arizona. First up is a Thursday, October 26 matchup with the Arizona Wildcats at 7:00 pm. The Huskies will also take on the Arizona State Sun Devils on Sunday, October 29 at 1:00 pm.
