SEATTLE -- Sophomore third baseman Ben Baird homered in the second inning and scored again in the eighth to account for both of Washington's runs as the Huskies topped Edmonds Community College, 2-1, in an exhibition game Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
Baird gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the early innings, homering on the first pitch he saw. He reached first via an error in the eighth, stole second, moved to third on a fly out and scored on a suicide-squeeze bunt by senior KJ Brady to give Washington the 2-0 lead.
Five Washington pitchers combined to hold Edmonds to three hits in the scheduled 10-inning game. Sophomore starter Jordan Jones struck out five in three hitless innings and was sophomore Chris Micheles followed with three more hitless innings. Redshirt-freshman Lucas Knowles allowed one hit in two innings of work.
Edmonds strung together a pair of hits off freshman Stevie Emanuels for their lone run in the ninth inning and freshman Jack DeCooman retired all three hitters he faced in the 10th inning to save the 2-1 lead.
The Titans pitching was equally up to the task, holding the Huskies to four hits. Baird, Levi Jordan, AJ Graffanino and Nick Kahle each had one hit.
