Dawgs Fall Short in 69-59 Loss at California

BERKELEY, Calif. – University of Washington sophomore David Crisp scored 14 of his team-high 16 points in the second half while also knocking down all four of his three's, but the Huskies were unable to get the road win in Berkeley as California came out with a 69-59 victory Thursday night at Haas Pavillion.

In a tightly fought contest that featured 10 ties and eight lead changes, the Huskies put four in double-figures led by Crisp's 16. Sophomore Noah Dickerson just missed a double-double with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds while freshman Markelle Fultz chipped in 12 and sophomore Matisse Thybulle had 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

After a back-and-forth start, Cal was able to use a 10-0 run to take a 26-17 lead with five minutes left in the first half but the Huskies quickly responded with five-straight points to cut the lead back to four. The Bears would go on to take a 34-28 lead into the half.

Washington came out of halftime and gave up two quick buckets to extend the Bears' lead to 10 but David Crisp ignited a 12-0 run for the Huskies as he knocked down back-to-back threes in 30 seconds which was followed by buckets from Dickerson and Thybulle to give UW its first lead since the 9:25 mark of the first half at 40-38.

Crisp would go on to hit two more from long distance with seven minutes remaining after Cal made another 6-0 run to take a 51-48 lead. Crisp's three's kept the Huskies in it trailing by just two with 6:25 left. Washington stayed close with the Bears and were still trailing by just two with 4:30 remaining before Cal was able to go on a 10-2 run to close out the night en route to a 69-59 final score.

California used its size to its advantage, scoring 22 second chance points on 18 offensive rebounds and knocking in 32 points in the paint. The Huskies, who were playing without senior forward Malik Dime due to a broken finger, had to battle Cal's tall front line while playing the majority of the game with four guards and one big.

The Huskies continue their Bay Area road trip as they will face Stanford on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 5 p.m. in a game televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
