Huskies Win Territorial Match In Front Of Record Breaking Crowd
September 25, 2016 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE, WASH. β It was a night for the record books on Montlake. The Washington Huskies defeated Seattle University (2-1) for the inaugural Seattle Cup title, presented by the Washington Athletics Club, in front of the largest crowd in Husky Soccer Stadium history (3,419).
"It was a great city rivalry game," said Washington head coach Jamie Clark. "The Seattle University team pushed us to the very brink. I thought we were very comfortable until we got the man sent off, then that made it absolute mayhem. But we battled until the very last minute, I give a lot of credit to the guys. It was a fantastic atmosphere, the fans were brilliant; it was a great night for soccer in Seattle."
The match was a fight between the two Seattle teams from start to finish, as the final seconds included several shots by the Redhawks but the Husky defense fought them off to take the victory.
Beau Blanchard attempted to take an early lead as he took a shot in the 31st second, but the shot went wide. Three shots later, the team found themselves up 1-0, after a goal by Handwalla Bwana, his third of the season.

Late in the first half, SeattleU's Sam Langston received a yellow card, the first caution of the match.
The first half ended with six shots from the Huskies, one save for goalkeeper Auden Schilder and one goal. The Redhawks were unable to equalize the score, allowing the Huskies to go into the half up 1-0.
Five minutes into the second half, Steven Wright was issued a yellow card; but that did not deflate the Huskies as just three minutes later, Elijah Rice scored his first goal of his career off an assist from Luke Hauswirth, making the score 2-0.

Schilder made a huge one-handed grab to keep the Redhawks off the board but in the 88th minute, a shot from Tyler John snuck past Schilder to make the score 2-1.
