Husky Baseball Starts Fall Ball
September 23, 2016 | Baseball
SEATTLE – The Husky Baseball team kicked off the 2016-17 season Friday with the first official team practice at Husky Ballpark. The day was filled with orientations and meetings before the team took the field in the afternoon to start their push for another run in the Pac-12 Conference.
There is a lot of optimism surrounding the Huskies as they begin their eighth season under the direction of Coach Lindsay Meggs. Washington is coming off its second NCAA post-season appearance in three years and has the second best winning percentage among all Pac-12 teams during that span. The Huskies welcome back a strong core of major contributors from 2016 – including All-Pac-12 players Jack Meggs and Joey Morgan and honorable mention selections Noah Bremer, Levi Jordan and John Naff.
Also joining the fold for the 2016 season is the highest ranked recruiting class during the Meggs' era. The class – ranked ninth by Perfect Game – features a wealth of position players and pitchers that will contribute immediately this upcoming year. Highlighting the group of newcomers are a couple of top-100 prospects: Christian Jones out of Federal Way, Wash. and Ben Baird from Agoura Hills, Calif. Baird was selected in the 20th round of the 2016 MLB Draft by Cleveland, while Jones was a 31st round pick by Boston.
The Huskies' fall training will culminate with the Purple and Gold World Series. This year's Purple and Gold World Series will take play Tuesday, Oct. 25 through Thursday, Oct. 27 at Husky Ballpark – which happened to be named the nation's No. 4 most beautiful college baseball setting by D1Baseball.com.
