Tough Match For Huskies Leads To 1-0 Loss At Harvard
September 11, 2016 | Men's Soccer
BOSTON, MASS -- Despite their strong offensive presence, the Washington Huskies fell to Harvard 1-0 on Sunday, Sept. 11.
"In the end, a flat first half performance cost us dearly," said Washington head coach Jamie Clark. "Though we did everything possible without scoring in the second, it just wasn't enough to make up for our poor start. Again, we showed just how dominant we can be for periods of the game; but we have to find a way to do it for longer and to finish our chances."
The match-up was only the second all-time meeting between the two teams, who hold a 0-0-1 record after a draw in Seattle last year.
In the first half, possession of the ball bounced back and fourth. Scott Menzies got the match started early as he took a shot in the first minute, but was blocked by a Harvard defender. Just three minutes later, goalkeeper Auden Schilder made a jumping save after a header from the Crimson.
The lone goal of the match came from Harvard's Andre Omiunu-Wheeler late in the 41st minute. David Coly attempted to tie up the match after a shot in the 43rd minute, but the shot went wide. The two teams went into the half at 1-0, Harvard.
Scoring opportunities proved difficult to come by for Harvard as Washington held strong control over the ball. The Huskies took 18 shots, but were unable to convert them into goals.
Thanks to a strong defensive Husky presence, however, Harvard was unsuccessful at widening their lead. Schilder recorded one save in the second half, finalizing the score at 1-0 in Harvard's favor.
Numerous shot opportunties arose for the Huskies, demonstrating their strength offensively. The team saw shots from: David Coly (6), Kyle Coffee (4), Luke Hauswirth (3), Henry Wingo (3), Quentin Pearson (1), Steven Wright (1), Scott Menzies (1), Justin Fiddes (1), Elijah Rice (1) and John Magnus (1).
Yellow cards were issued to Justin Schmidt and Kyle Coffee in the final twenty minutes of the match.
The Huskies went 1-1 this weekend on their Ivy Leagure road trip after defeating Dartmouth on Thursday, 1-0.
Fans can watch the team next Friday, Sept. 16 as they return home for a 7 p.m. match against Davidson.
