UW Defeats Tennessee 1-0 For First Win Of 2016
August 25, 2016 | Women's Soccer
Knoxville, Tenn. – The Washington women's soccer team grabbed its first win of the 2016 season today with a 1-0 victory over Tennessee at Regal Soccer Stadium, moving its record to 1-1.
"We knew it would be a tough game," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "It's really hot and humid here and they have a nice field and great fans, it's really a fun place to play honestly. Tennessee has a lot of athletes, they're physical and fast but I think we did a good job of preparing for them this week."
The Huskies came out attacking with Shannon Simon taking three shots in the first 15 minutes of play, the third of which sailed just over the crossbar on a try from the right of the goal. After countering a Tennessee attack, Washington was given their first corner of the night with 27 minutes remaining in the first half. After the ball was cleared out of danger by the Vols, junior defender Dominique Bond-Flasza came up and hit a rocket of a ball into the top left corner, just missing the outstretched hand of the Tennessee keeper. It was the first goal for the California native on the season, and her second career score as a Husky.
"We've been practicing set pieces for a while, and it was all about just knowing your role," said Bond-Flasza. "My role was to get to any balls that popped out, so I just concentrated on keeping my head down and keeping it on frame."
In the second half Tennessee came out searching for an equalizer, and the Husky defense stepped up to the challenge.
"The game plan was to just not turn over the ball," said Gallimore. "We knew they'd come out playing hard in the second half, we ended up defending for most of it."
No more than two minutes into the second half, Tennessee got off two shots that were blocked by the Husky defense, before Shimer stopped a header in the box. The junior goalkeeper began to put her mark on the game as the second half rolled on, grabbing two saves before running out and attacking a ball at the feet of a Tennessee forward with ten minutes remaining. As the match neared the end, Shimer grabbed her fifth and final save, and punched a ball out of danger on a Tennessee corner kick. The Volunteers ended up taking 12 corners in the match compared to just four for the Dawgs.
"With the ridiculous amount of corners they had we got lucky they didn't score," said Gallimore.
In the end, the Husky defense was able to hold off the Tennessee attack, and pick up a big 1-0 win on the road. The shutout was Shimer's second as a Husky, as she kept California off the board last season in her lone start of 2015.
"Havana McElvaine and Lisa Jensen, who's a freshman, played great defense tonight, as did Shimer," said Gallimore. "That was a great shutout tonight and really well deserved."
The Huskies will return to Seattle for a big home opener against No. 13 Santa Clara on Sunday August 28th at 3 p.m. with the Pac-12 Network airing the game. Tickets to the match will only cost one dollar for those wearing a Husky Camp t-shirt, with the first 75 fans receiving a pair of sunglasses.
