The Maxwell Football Club today announced its watch lists for the 80th annual Maxwell Award and the 22nd annual Chuck Bednarik Award and a total of four Huskies appear on the lists.
Sophomore quarterback Jake Browning and sophomore running back Myles Gaskin are on the Maxwell Award watch list. The Maxwell Award, named in honor of Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell, has been given to America's College Player of the Year since 1937. Maxwell's contributions to the game of football were extensive, including time as a player, a sportswriter and an official.
Junior safety Budda Baker and junior cornerback Sidney Jones are each on the Bednarik Award watch list. The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995. Chuck Bednarik, former standout at Penn and with the Philadelphia Eagles, is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of '69 and the NFL Hall of Fame's Class of '67.
Browning played in and started 12 games in 2015. He was the first Husky true freshman ever to start a season opener at quarterback. The Folsom, Calif. native threw for 2,955 yards, completing 233 passes in 368 attempts, while connecting for 16 touchdowns. His passing yards and completions were fifth most in UW single-season history, while his 368 attempts ranked sixth all-time. Browning finished the season with six straight 200-yard passing games and eight for the season, fourth-most ever at Washington.
Like Browning, Gaskin put up never before seen numbers in Huskies' history at his position as a freshman. The O'Dea HS graduate became the first true freshman to ever post 1,000 yards rushing in UW history. He gained 1,302 yards on 227 attempts in 13 games for a 100.2 yards per game average. Gaskin also scored 14 rushing touchdowns, fifth-most ever at Washington. He was a freshman All-America first-team member from the Football Writers Association of American and honorable mention All-Pac-12.
Baker started 12 games at safety for the Huskies in 2015 and was first team All-Pac-12. The Bellevue, Wash. native is considered one of surest tacklers and speediest defensive backs in the nation. He recorded 49 tackles as a sophomore, notched two interceptions and was credited with nine pass break-ups.
Baker joins forces with Jones to form one of the nation's top defensive back duos in the country. Jones, like Baker, was named first team All-Pac-12 in 2015. He started all 13 games at cornerback and finished the season as the Pac-12 leader in pass break-ups with 14. Jones also tied for fourth in the conference in interceptions (4), tied for second in forced fumbles (3) and tied for fifth in fumble recoveries (2). He posted 45 tackles, including 3 ½ tackles for loss.
