Rallings Named First-Team All-American By ABCA
June 18, 2016 | Baseball
OMAHA, Neb. - Earlier this week, Washington senior Troy Rallings was named the West's first team All-American reliever by the American Baseball Coaches Association. On Saturday, he beat out seven other relievers from the eight regions and was named the ABCA/Rawlings Division I First Team All-American relief pitcher.
Rallings -- who has already been named first team All-America by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger and D1Baseball -- becomes the third Husky to earn All-America recognition from the nation's coaches, but he's the first to ever earn first team recognition in the 68 years the ABCA has released its team. He adds his name to a short list that previously just included fellow UW pitchers Brett Merrick (1994, second team) and Tim Lincecum (2006, second team).
The 22nd-round selection of the Los Angeles Angels in last week's Major League Baseball Draft, Rallings was 4-1 with a 0.89 ERA in 61 innings for UW in 2016. He led the nation in WHIP (0.72), was second in ERA and tied for third with 16 saves, totals which all led the Pac-12. He made 28 appearances and led the conference in opposing avg. (.155), fewest hits allowed (32), fewest runs (7) and earned runs allowed (6).
Among Rallings' 16 saves, only one fit the conventions of what a typical closer records – three outs or less. He had eight saves that were four to six outs and six saves that were seven to nine outs.
Washington was 24-4 in games in which Rallings pitched. He helped the Huskies to a 33-23 overall record, second-place finish in the Pac-12 Conference and their second NCAA appearance in three seasons.
