SEATTLE -- Washington senior pitcher Spencer Jones was the first Husky to be selected in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft when he was selected in the 10th round, 300th overall by the Tampa Bay Rays in Friday's second day of the amateur draft.
Jones ranked second in the Pac-12 (second on team) with 32 appearances, including four starts. He tied for the team lead with six wins and had a final record of 6-2 with a 4.14 ERA in 58 2/3 innings. He was especially tough out of the bullpen, going 6-1 with a 3.30 ERA in 28 appearances.
Jones ended his career in stellar fashion, earning the win at the NCAA Nashville Region in a 9-8 victory over Vanderbilt. He pitched the final 3 2/3 innings as Washington rallied from an 8-2 deficit to beat the Commodores on an eighth inning home run.
Jones, from Sparks, Nev., made 62 appearances in two seasons with the Huskies. He finished just outside the UW career appearance list despite playing just two seasons in Seattle.
He was 10-8 with a 3.48 ERA in 124 innings over two seasons. He had 106 strikeouts in his 124 innings.
Jones graduates Saturday with a degree in Economics. Once his baseball career is over, his dream is to go to dental school.
