May 08, 2016 | Softball
BATON ROUGE, La. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Washington softball team split a doubleheader with No. 13 LSU on Saturday (May 7) at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge, La. After dropping the opener, 6-0, the Huskies bounced back, scoring six unanswered runs to win the second game, 9-4.
For the 20th time this season, the Husky bats recorded double-digit hits in the doubleheader finale. Seniors Kimberlee Souza and Jennie McNeill, junior Ali Aguilar and sophomore Kelly Burdick each recorded a pair of hits while Souza led the team with four runs batted in.
Sophomore RHP Madi Schreyer (10-3) earned the complete game win in the circle, allowing just six hits and four runs while striking out a season-high eight batters. Schreyer and the Husky defense held LSU scoreless in six of the seven innings.
With the game tied, 4-4, Washington scored a run off a wild pitch in the sixth to reclaim its lead before exploding for more four runs in the seventh to run away with the 9-4 victory.
The Huskies scored three runs in the third to take the game's first lead. Burdick ignited the rally with a leadoff single to left and after Aguilar drew a walk, the pair advanced off a fly out to center. Souza then laid down a squeeze-bunt to plate Burdick for the first run of the game. In the next at-bat, junior Casey Stangel's hit up the middle scored Aguilar and a fielding error allowed another run to cross as the Huskies went on top, 3-0.
LSU came storming back in the home half of the inning with four runs of their own to take the lead. The Tigers loaded the bases and a two-RBI double scored its first runs of the contest. After an RBI ground out tied the game, a single to center put the home team on top, 4-3.
The lead was short-lived however as Washington used a two-out rally to lock the game back up, 4-4 in the fourth. Aguilar drew a walk and Van Zee was hit-by-pitch before Souza delivered an RBI single through the left side.
The Huskies scored four runs off three hits and a pair of LSU miscues in the seventh. With one out, senior Dani Braun was hit-by-pitch and fellow senior Jennie McNeill reached on an infield single. After LSU got the lead runner out, freshman Tannon Snow drew a walk and Burdick singled to load the bases. A fielding error then gave the Huskies a 7-4 lead and after another drawn walk, Souza delivered a two-RBI single.
In the doubleheader opener, Washington had scoring opportunities throughout the contest, despite tallying just three hits, a trio of singles from sophmore's Julia DePonte and Taylor Van Zee and freshman Morganne Flores. The Husky bats were stifled by LSU's freshman pitcher Sydney Smith who pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout.
Junior LHP Casey Stangel was charged with the loss, giving up six runs -- two earned -- and 10 hits with two strikeouts.
Washington threatened in back-to-back innings, putting a pair on in both the second and the third but were unable to manufacture the timely hit to score any runs.
LSU scored the game's first run off a fielding error in the third inning. After back-to-back singles, the pair stole second and third before scoring off a misplayed grounder. The Tigers tacked on three more runs in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead before using a two-out rally to score two more in the sixth.
