Washington Drops Finale Against LSU Off Walk-Off Home Run In Extras
May 08, 2016 | Softball
BATON ROUGE, La. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Washington softball team did not trail in the entire game until the ninth inning when No. 13 LSU hit a walk-off home run to win the series finale, 5-4 on Sunday (May 8) at Tiger Park.
After taking a 3-0 lead in the third and holding the Tigers scoreless through five frames, LSU hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game. Washington wasted little time to retake the lead in the seventh as senior Kimberlee Souza hit a solo home run, but the Tigers used a two-out rally to tie the game back up and force extra innings in the bottom of the seventh.
Sophomore RHP Madi Schreyer (11-3) took the loss in the circle, throwing all but one inning of the game. The Woodinville, Wash. native worked her way out of several jams early to keep the Tigers scoreless through five frames. After junior Casey Stangel entered the circle in the seventh, Schreyer re-entered to pitch the extra innings.
Sophomore Taylor Van Zee and seniors Dani Braun and Jennie McNeill each recorded a pair of base knocks in the contest and Souza hit her 12th home run of the season in the seventh inning. Junior Ali Aguilar, Van Zee and Souza each recorded an RBI.
After Washington left a pair stranded in the eighth, LSU put the winning run on third base in the bottom of the inning. The Tigers led off with a single through the right side and then advanced into scoring position off a bunt. After a fly out put a runner at third, LSU smoked a one hopper into right field, which looked to have scored the winning run, but sophomore Krystal Aubert threw the runner out at first to end the inning.
Stangel reached on a one-out single in the ninth, but two consecutive ground outs ended the inning before LSU hit a walk-off home run with one out in the bottom of the inning.
Washington used three hits, including back-to-back doubles, and an error to take a 3-0 lead in the third. With one out, sophomore Kelly Burdick started the rally, reaching on an infield single to third base. In the next at-bat, Aguilar doubled over the head of the center fielder to plate Burdick for the first run of the game. Van Zee then stepped to the plate and delivered Washington's second consecutive double in the left-center gap to score Aguilar. A throwing error scored the Huskies' third run of the inning.
The Tigers threatened in three consecutive innings, loading the bases in both the fourth and fifth, but Schreyer and the defense worked their way out of the jams to keep the Tigers from scoring until the sixth inning home run.
Washington returns to action next weekend (May 13-15) in Palo Alto, Calif. for a three-game set against Stanford.
