SEATTLE -- The No. 10-ranked University of Washington softball team succumbed to a four-run seventh in a 6-5 loss to Utah this afternoon (May 1) at Husky Softball Stadium. Trailing 6-2 in the seventh, Washington mounted a comeback, scoring three runs and had the bases loaded with just one out but were unable to get the tying run across.
Washington held a 2-1 advantage going into the top of the sixth before the Ute's scored a run to tie it up. The visitors then scored four more in the seventh to take its first lead of the entire series.
On Senior Day, senior Hailey Bator made her first start of the season in the circle and was nearly flawless. The lefty did not give up a hit in 4.1 innings pitched while recording four strikeouts. Bator retired the side in each of the opening three frames including back-to-back strikeouts to end the third. Junior Casey Stangel entered the game in the fourth after a one-out walk and after walking the next two batters, sophomore Madi Schreyer entered and took the loss, throwing 2.2 innings, allowing four hits and five runs.
Sophomore Taylor Van Zee and freshman Morganne Flores led the offense with two runs batted in. Van Zee hit two doubles in the game and junior Ali Aguilar also tallied a pair of hits.
Washington used a two-out rally to take the game's first lead in the third. With a pair of runners on, Van Zee smoked a two-RBI double to give the home team a 2-0 advantage.
Utah trimmed their deficit in half in the fifth drawing four consecutive walks to score their first run of the series before tying the game off an RBI single in the sixth. The Ute's drew a leadoff walk to open the frame before advancing to second off a wild pitch.
With the game locked 2-2 in the seventh, Utah erupted for four runs off three hits and a pair of walks to take their first lead of the series, 6-2.
Trailing 6-2 in the seventh, Washington mounted a comeback that fell just short. Aguilar singled to open the frame and then Van Zee followed with a double to put runners at second and third. After Utah made a pitching change, senior Kimberlee Souza was hit-by-pitch for the 46th time in her career, which is a new school record at Washington. In the next at-bat, junior Casey Stangel drew a bases loaded walk to score a run before Flores hit a single off the wall, which nearly cleared the fence, to score two more runs. Trailing 6-5, the Dawgs loaded the bases with one out, but the Ute's got the force out at home for the second out before a strikeout ended the game.
Washington returns to action next weekend, travling to Baton Rouge, La. for a three-game set against LSU.
