Bears Beat Dawgs, 7-1, To Even Series
May 01, 2016 | Baseball
BERKELEY, Calif. – Gage Matuszak hit his fifth home run of the season, but it wasn't enough for the visiting Huskies as Cal second baseman Robbie Tenorowicz drove in four runs to lead the Bears to a 7-1 win at Evans Diamond on Saturday.
California (24-15, 10-10 Pac-12) scored twice in the sixth inning and four times in the seventh to break open a close game and even up the three-game series at 1-1.
The loss snapped the 25th-ranked Huskies' (24-15, 10-7) season-high five-game win streak. The Huskies also fell a game behind first-place Utah, who beat UCLA, 9-4, earlier Saturday.
The Bears struck first, scoring a run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly. Cal loaded the bases with just one out and the heart of its order due up, but UW starter Joe DeMers was able to get back-to-back fly balls – the first one a sacrifice fly by Tenerowicz to score Brian Celsi for the game's opening run.
Cal scored twice more in the sixth to take a 3-0 lead. Tenerowicz drove in his second run of the game on a double and the Bears added another on a fielder's choice.
The Huskies chopped into the Bears' lead in the seventh on Matuszak's home run. He took a pitch from Cal starter Tanner Dotson the opposite way and over the wall in left-center field and off the top of the scoreboard for his fifth home run of the season. His homer made the score 3-1, but that was the closest the Huskies would get.
Cal put the game away in the bottom half of the seventh, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring four times. Tenerowicz drove in the first two runs of the inning with a single up the middle and Mitchell Kranson drove in the other two runs with a 2-RBI single.
In a battle of freshman starters, Cal's Dotson (2-3) came away victorious. He struck out four and allowed all seven of the Huskies hits on the evening in seven innings of work.
DeMers (3-3) equaled a career high with 6 1/3 innings but he took the loss in his homecoming. The Martinez, Calif. native gave up eight hits and walked two. He was charged with all seven runs that Cal scored.
Chris Baker (2 for 4) and Levi Jordan (2 for 3) accounted for more than half of the Huskies' seven hits on the night.
The Huskies and Bears wrap up the series Sunday with the rubber match starting at 1:00 p.m. PT.
