April 03, 2016 | Men's Tennis
The No. 29 ranked Husky men's tennis team got their second win of the weekend Sunday afternoon after beating the Arizona Wildcats 6-1 at the Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium. Washington picked up their third Pac-12 conference win of the season today, putting their overall record at 16-5 (3-1 in the Pac-12).
The Huskies got off to a great start, winning the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Jake Douglas and Gal Hakak, on court three, were the first to win their doubles match, winning the match 6 sets to 3. On court one, Wendell Watanabe and Piers Folley secured the doubles point for the Dawgs with a win against Arizona's Will Kneale and Oliver Plaskett. They got off to a slow start, down 1-4, but stayed on course and finished with five straight points to make it 6-4. Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer's match was cut short after the Huskies locked in the doubles point; they finished 5-5.
“It is a thrill to get the win,” said head coach Matt Anger. “It is really good that we were able to separate in the match. Their guys were fighting hard and so that makes us feel good.”
In singles play Gal Hakak was the first to finish, winning his singles match against Arizona's Jason Jaruvang in two sets, 6-0, 6-1. Enzo Sommer coasted through his match as well, winning his match 6-2, 6-2.
With Washington ahead of Arizona 3-0, No. 84 Mitch Stewart clinched the win for the purple and gold in his match against Arizona's No. 61 Naoki Takeda. Stewart won his first set handily, 6-1, but fell behind early in the second set. But after winning the last three points and finishing the set 6-3, Stewart clinched the win for the Huskies.
Kawaki Lam battled all afternoon in what were two very close sets, but pulled out the win in both of them finishing 7-5, 7-5. Douglas won his match in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6.
“We were able to keep piling up points and keep going, even after we got the fourth point,” said Anger. “We did a better job today to play our best.”
The only loss of the day came on court five, where Joao Barra fell to Arizona's Harry Busby 6-7, 2-6.
“It is nice to be 3-1 in the conference and looking forward to being on the road,” said Anger. “It is some good battles again next week. Every match in our conference is a battle. We have Cal and Stanford next weekend.”
The Dawgs will take to the road next weekend to continue Pac-12 play. Washington will face California on Friday, April 8th and Stanford on Saturday, April 9th.
