Huskies Sit in Third after Day One at SMU/DAC Invitational
April 02, 2016 | Women's Golf
"I was proud of our group today, despite some tough conditions," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "I never felt like they gave up, it was cold and windy and we could not get anything going but I was happy to see them keep fighting on a tough 36-hole day."
Thomas finished the day at 1-over 145 after carding rounds of 73 (+1) and 72 (E). The senior recorded four birdies on the day and was the best player on a par 3 hole on the day, birdying twice, once on hole four and once on hole seven throughout the two rounds. Thomas, who has finished in the top 25 in all but one tournament this season, is eight strokes off the lead.
"Charlotte was really steady and she had some chances that didn't quite go her way but I think that will fuel her for tomorrow," added Mulflur.
She was followed by freshman Julianne Alvarez who improved her score by three strokes during the day's second round en route to finishing at 3-over 147. Alvarez knocked in eight birdies during day one of the two-day event and finished her second-round at even-par 72 to sit 10 strokes behind first place.
Senior Ying Luo posted back-to-back rounds of 4-over 76 to put her at 8-over 152, which is tied for 29th while freshman Wenyung Keh carded a 13-over 157 and is tied for 54th.
The 10th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls sit atop the team leaderboard at 2-over 578 while 18th-ranked UNLV is in second at 20-over 596. Individually, Kansas' Yupaporn Kawinpakorn leads the field by six strokes at 7-under 137.
Washington continues play at 6 a.m. PT on Saturday, teeing off with Oklahoma State and UNLV.
