DALLAS – The 13th ranked University of Washington women's golf team posted its fifth top three finish of the season as it placed third at the SMU/Dallas Athletic Club Invitational on Saturday with a score of 31-over 895. The Huskies saved their best round for last finishing the day with a 9-over 297 and placed two Dawgs in the top 10.
Tenth-ranked Oklahoma State won the team title with a 4-over 868 while UNLV came in second at 24-over 888. Kansas' Yupaporn Kawinpakorn maintained her lead over the final 18 holes as she finished at 6-under 210 to take the individual crown.
“The course was playing much better today, conditions were better and I thought we did a good job and the effort is definitely there, no question about that,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “We hadn't competed in almost a month so it was good to get back out there and get our feet wet as we're nearing the postseason part of our year.”
Following 54 holes, senior Charlotte Thomas and freshman Julianne Alvarez each ended up with a 4-over 220 to finish tied for ninth. Thomas' 73-72-75 earned her her fifth top-10 finish of the season and 22nd of her career, which is tied for second all-time at UW (SooBin Kim – 22).
“Charlotte got off to a really hot start and then had a few unforced errors on 10 and 11 and up until that point she had a really nice round going,” added Mulflur. “It was good to see her attack the difficult holes and come out on top.”
Alvarez climbed three spots on the final day moving from T12th to a ninth-place tie thanks to her 1-over 73 over the last 18 holes. Her three-round score of 4-over 220 (75-72-73) marked her fourth top 10 finish this year.
Senior Ying Luo posted her best round on the final day as she carded a 3-over 75 to give her a three-day total of 11-over 227, tying for 28th. She has finished inside the top 30 in every tournament this season.
Fellow freshman Wenyung Keh, who's currently ranked 43rd, also showcased her top round on Saturday as she knocked in a 2-over 74 to climb seven spots and finish tied for 47th. Rounding out the UW contingent was freshman Clementina Rodriguez, who finished at 31-over 247 for 77th place.
Up next, the Huskies head to Tempe, Arizona for their final regular season tournament of the year at the PING Sun Devil Invitational, Friday April 8-10. The Pac-12 Championships follow the next week in Pleasanton, Calif. (April 18-20).
