No. 29 Huskies Outlast Utah, 4-3
April 02, 2016 | Men's Tennis
The No. 29 ranked Washington men's tennis team came out ready to play Friday night against Pac-12 opponent Utah at the Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium. The Huskies picked up their second conference win of the season, putting their record in the Pac-12 at 2-1.
The Huskies started the night off right, taking the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Jake Douglas and Gal Hakak handled court three, winning their match 6 sets to 1. However, on court one, Wendell Watanabe and Piers Folley fell to Utah's Matt Cowley and Dan Little 1-6. Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer's match on court two came down to the end in a back-and-forth match, ultimately coming out on top 7 sets to 5.
“We seem to have really good matches with Utah. Fortunately it has gone our way the last two years,” said head Coach Matt Anger. “Today was no exception. It was a good match, a lot of close matches.”
In singles play Jake Douglas was the first to finish, winning his singles match against Utah's Egbert Weverink in two sets, 6-4, 6-0. Sebastian Hawken followed shortly after, losing his match 6-7, 2-6.
Gal Hakak won his match in on court three in straight sets. Hakak won the first set handily, 6-2, but the second set came down to the wire. After falling behind 4 sets to 5, he fought back to win the set, 7-6.
The match of the night was no doubt on court one, where No. 84 Mitch Stewart faced Utah's Matt Cowley. Stewart fell behind early in the match, losing the first set 0-6. But he battled back in tough second set, outlasting Cowley 6 sets to 4. In the final set, Stewart led the entire way while securing the victory for Washington.
“[Mitch] certainly had a turnaround after losing the first set 6-0,” said coach Anger. “Mitch is a battler and if anyone doesn't know that, they just haven't been around.”
The Dawgs will look to continue the momentum when they play the Arizona Wildcats this Sunday at noon. You can follow all of the action on the live stream page at GoHuskies.com
