UW in Fifth after Rain-Delayed 1st Round at Bay Area Intercollegiate

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The 12th ranked University of Washington women's golf team sits in fifth place after a water-logged day at the Meadow Club in San Francisco at the Bay Area Intercollegiate. The Huskies, who played with just four student-athletes, finished five strokes off the lead at 12-over 300.
The first round was delayed by over three hours and tournament officials decided to shorten the event from 54 holes to 36 due to the rain so only one round was played on Monday.
“I was really proud of the way our group handled the weather delays today, they were great about it,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “It didn't seem to bother anyone and they dealt with it really well. We're only five strokes off the lead and we've been down by more heading into the final round already this season so I feel good about where we're at heading into tomorrow.”
Due to finals and the upcoming international tournaments, Washington's lineup featured just seniors Ying Luo and Charlotte Thomas along with freshmen Sarah Rhee and Clementina Rodriguez. Luo led the UW charge as she finished the first round tied for sixth at even-par 72. Luo posted three birdies, two of which came on the back nine to sit just two strokes off the lead.
“Ying played really solid today. She has a way of coming back if she hits a rough patch and it's really impressive to watch her respond and rally in those situations,” added Mulflur.
Thomas posted a 2-over 74 and is tied for 13th heading in to the final round on Tuesday. She's joined the top 20 by freshman Sarah Rhee, who carded a 3-over 75 during the rain-delayed first round. Rounding out scoring for the Dawgs is freshman Rodriguez who finished at 7-over 79 to tie for 46th.
The final 18 holes tee off Tuesday morning at the Meadow Club in California.
