No. 45 Washington Wins In Battle With Minnesota
March 06, 2016 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 45 Washington men's tennis team battled through a challenging match against Minnesota today, but were able to grab the 5-2 victory at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in a back and forth match.
“Like always, when we play Minnesota we have a lot of good matches,” said head coach Matt Anger. “It was a tough loss last year but every match and year is different, I'm glad we were able to turn it around.”
The Dawgs began by grabbing the doubles point, in dominating fashion, never trailing on all three courts. Court one was first to finish, as Piers Foley and Wendell Watanabe defeated Marino Alpeza and Ruben Weber 6-3. Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer clinched the point for Washington, defeating Justyn Lynn and Matic Spec 6-2 on court two, with Gal Hakak and Jake Douglas' match on court three not finishing.
Junior Gal Hakak was first to finish in singles on court three, grabbing the 6-3, 6-2 win over Lynn, with Joao Barra defeating Marino Alpeza 6-4, 7-5 for the only two matches to finish in straight sets. With the Dawgs up 3-0, four matches remained in third sets, with the first going to the Gophers on court one as Spec handed Douglas only his third loss in dual match play.
“We had some matches that we were a little back and forth and up and down,” said Anger. “We would've liked to be a little more consistent there but we're happy with our guys that they stuck it out.”
After dropping the first set 6-3, Foley battled back on court five with a big 6-1 second set and was able to grab the third 7-5 and clinch the victory for the Huskies. On court four Sebastian Hawken came out on top of another marathon match, defeating Josip Krstanovic 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, with Sommer falling on court two to Weber 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 to bring the final score to 5-2.
The Huskies will be back in action this coming Friday as they will host Gonzaga at 3 p.m. Be sure to keep up to date with the latest news on the team by checking out our website at GoHuskies.com, and following us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
