Dawgs Win In Walk-Off Fashion To Earn Doubleheader Split

SEATTLE – Jack Meggs hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Husky Baseball team a 10-9 win and earn a split of a double header Saturday at Husky Ballpark.

Levi Jordan, who pinch-ran for Duncan Hendrickson, advanced to third on a walk and wild pitch, and then came around to score the winning run with two outs when Meggs served an 0-2 pitch from Santa Clara closer Max Kuhns (0-1) through the hole between first and second. The game-winning hit set off a wild celebration at second base and saved what could have been a disastrous day for the Dawgs.

The Huskies (5-4) dropped the first game of the double-header, 2-1, thanks to Broncos' (6-5) shortstop John Cresto, who hit two home runs, including a two-out, go-ahead homer in the ninth. And, in game two, UW watched an early 7-1 lead evaporate into a 9-7 deficit heading to the bottom of the sixth inning, before Meggs capped the comeback.

Santa Clara scored in the first to jump ahead of Washington 1-0, but the Huskies scored four times in the first and three more times in the second to take early command of the game. Josh Cushing drove in the first run with a RBI single and one out later, MJ Hubbs hit a three-run home run, his second of the year, to make the score 4-1.

John Naff hit a sacrifice fly and Cushing added a two-run shot in the second to give the Huskies the six-run cushion. The homer was Cushing's third of the year.

But, the lead did not last long as Santa Clara sent 13 batters to the plate in the fourth and scored seven times to take an 8-7 lead. Husky starter Joe DeMers was charged with all seven runs as he hit three batters and gave up three hits in the inning. He left with a runner at second and the score tied, but reliever Lance Berringer was greeted by a RBI single from first baseman Jake Brodt that gave the Broncos their first lead.

Santa Clara added to its lead in the sixth when catcher Stevie Berman led off the inning with a solo blast to center field. He took a 2-2 pitch from Greg Minier over wall for his third home run of the year.

But the Huskies began chipping away in the bottom of the inning. Hubbs grounded out to pick up his fourth RBI of the game and make it 9-8 before the Huskies finally tied the game in the eighth.

After back-to-back walks to Meggs and Naff to lead off the eighth, Cushing sacrificed both runners over and KJ Brady, who entered the game earlier as a pinch hitter, tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

Troy Rallings (1-0) worked a perfect ninth inning to earn the win. He was the sixth pitcher of the game.

Meggs ended the game 2 for 5 with three runs scored. Cushing was 3 for 3 with 3 RBI and two runs scored. He is now hitting .484 on the season and has a team-best 13 RBI.

MJ Hubbs was 2 for 5 with four RBI.

The two teams wrap up the series Sunday, with first pitch moved up an hour to 12 p.m.
