Dawgs Shutout, 2-0, By Ducks
March 26, 2016 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Four Oregon pitchers combined to shutout Washington, 2-0, Friday night at Husky Ballpark to even the Pac-12 series at 1-1.
The Huskies managed only four hits on the night – all off starter Matt Krook – as they fell to 11-7 (3-2 in Pac-12 play) on the season. Three Oregon relievers combined to allow just one baserunner on a walk over the final four innings as the Ducks' improved to 11-8 (2-3 Pac-12) on the season.
Both starting pitchers cruised through the first four innings before the Ducks finally got to UW starter Joe DeMers in the fifth. Matt Kroon led off the inning with a double and was left standing at third with two outs when shortstop Travis Moniot lined an 0-2 pitch from DeMers into center field for a RBI single.
The Huskies had their best opportunity to get to the Ducks and Krook in the bottom of the fifth, but were denied. With two outs Jack Meggs singled to left with Levi Jordan at second base. The left fielder Jake Bennett came up firing home to the plate and the throw easily beat Jordan, but Jordan made a great slide and appeared to get under the tag. But, the Husky sophomore was called out on the bang-bang play and Oregon kept the 1-0 lead heading to the sixth.
In the sixth, the Ducks extended their lead to 2-0 on a bases loaded walk. DeMers hit the lead-off batter Austin Grebeck and gave up a single to Kyle Kasser to start the inning. After a sacrifice bunt he was replaced by Will Ballowe.
Ballowe walked the first batter he faced to load the bases, but bounced back to strike out Matt Kroon for the second out. But, pinch-hitter Nick Catalano drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to force in the second and final run of the game.
Ballowe settled down after allowing the bases loaded walk. He struck out the next seven batters and had a career-high eight by the time he left with two outs in the ninth.
DeMers (2-1) was tagged with his first career loss. The freshman ended up allowing two earned runs and giving up four base hits and a walk.
Krook (1-1), a former first round draft pick, picked up the win for Oregon.
Jordan (2 for 3) had two of Washington's hits.
The two teams wrap up the series Saturday, with a 3:00 p.m. first pitch (Pac-12 Network). RHP Spencer Jones (1-2, 5.14) will take the hill against LHP David Peterson (2-2, 1.42).
