UW Drops Game 2 Of DH, 6-3, In Extra Innings
March 13, 2016 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Gage Matuszak hit a two-out home run in the seventh inning to send game two of a doubleheader into extra innings, but Pacific scored three times in the 10th inning to beat the Huskies, 6-3, and split the doubleheader.
Louis Mejia drove in the go-ahead run in extras for Pacific (6-10) with a RBI single and the Tigers tacked on two more runs on a fielder's choice and an error.
Tigers' pitcher Taylor Johnson (1-2) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn the win and Fineas Delbontasmith pitched in the 10th to earn the save.
Ryan Schmitten (0-2) was charged with the loss for the Huskies (8-5), who saw a four-game win streak snapped. The Huskies won game one of the doubleheader 6-3.
With the game scheduled to only go seven innings and Washington trailing 3-2, Matuszak took a 1-1 pitch from Pacific closer Vince Arobio the opposite way down the left-field line to tie the score. The ball stayed just fair inside the foul pole and landed in Pacific's bullpen for Matuszak's first home run of the year.
The homer nearly ended the game, but one pitch earlier, pinch-runner Kyle London was caught trying to steal second.
The Huskies were behind the entire game until Matuszak's game-tying homer. Pacific grabbed the quick 1-0 lead in in the first inning with a single run. Gio Brusa drove in Kevin Sandri from second base with a two-out single off Husky starter Spencer Jones.
The Tigers added another run in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. JJ Wagner, who doubled and advanced to third on an error by left fielder KJ Brady, scored on a sacrifice fly by Lucas Halstead.
Washington got a run back in the bottom of the inning when MJ Hubbs led off with a triple and Josh Cushing drove him home with a single to pick up his team-leading 16th RBI.
Pacific extended its lead by to two when they scored an unearned run in the sixth inning and chased Jones from the game. Jones gave up a double to Louis Mejia – the fourth double of the game he allowed – and was replaced by Troy Ralllings. Rallings induced a ground ball to short, but AJ Graffanino threw wide of the base allowing Mejia to score from second on the error.
Jones ended up pitching 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs – two earned – on seven hits. He struck out six and did not walk a batter in his second start of the season.
The Huskies made it a one-run ballgame in the sixth when Hubbs singled, advanced to second on a Cushing ground out and came around to score on a John Naff single. Hubbs finished the game 4 for 5 with two runs scored.
Pacific starter Jake Jenkins threw six innings, allowing two runs on eight hits but ended up not figuring in the decision. He struck out three Husky batters and walked one.
Washington outhit Pacific 13-11 and had at least one runner on base in every inning. But, the Huskies hit into four inning-ending double plays and defensively committed a season-high four errors.
The Huskies and Tigers wrap up the series Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at Husky Ballpark. The game was originally scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. but was moved up due to a poor weather forecast for Sunday. Parking is free and it is family day at the ballpark with a family of four costing $20
