February 06, 2016 | Men's Tennis
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 41 Washington men's tennis team fell to No. 53 Indiana today in a close 5-2 match to move to 7-2 on the season.
The Huskies surrendered the doubles point to the Hoosiers as Piers Foley and Enzo Sommer fell on court one 6-2, and Jake Douglas and Wendell Watanabe lost 6-4. Court three did not finish.
“It was a very tough loss today,” said head coach Matt Anger. “There were plenty of opportunities for us to do better.”
The singles began by each team trading points as No. 84 Mitch Stewart fell on court one to No. 27 Sam Monette 6-3, 6-2 and Sebastian Hawken rallying back in the third set to defeat Antonio Cembellin 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. With the remaining matches all in third sets, the Huskies were unable to keep Indiana from clinching as they were able to win the next two. Foley rallied back after falling 6-2 in the first set by winning 7-5 in the second, but fell 6-3 in the third to Afonso Salgado. No. 122 Gal Hakak won the first set against Matthew McCoy 6-2 but ultimately fell by a score of 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to give the match to Indiana.
“It is definitely going to take a while to get over today's match,” said Anger. “We need to execute more consistently from start to finish, and it was a tough stretch all the way through.”
No. 121 Douglas was able to get the win on court two against Daniel Bednarczyk in a tough three-setter 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, while Sommer fell 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to make the final tally 5-2 in favor of the Hoosiers.
The Huskies will take the next weekend off, but be back at home the following weekend, when they face Fresno State Feb. 19th and Pepperdine Feb. 21st.
