February 20, 2016 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 48 Washington Huskies were victorious today over No. 73 Fresno State 7-0 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center, giving head coach Matt Anger his 350th career win with the program.
“It was a super match today from everybody from top to bottom,” said Anger. “We've had some good matches this year, and within those some ups and downs, but today was our most solid effort all the way through.”
The Huskies grabbed the doubles point to begin the match, winning on all three courts. First to finish was court three, where Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer teamed up to defeat Youssef Hassan and Jakob Keppelmann 6-1. Jake Douglas and Mitch Stewart grabbed the clinching match on court two, defeating Jeremy Moser and Nikolas Papic 7-5. The match on court one was played out, going to a tie-breaker as court two finished. For the first time during the dual match season, Piers Foley and Wendell Watanabe teamed up on court one to grab the tie-breaker 7-2 over Fresno's Mantas Bugailiskis and Euan McIntosh.
Enzo Sommer was first to finish in the Dawgs big singles night, defeating Hassan 6-0, 6-2 on court three for his eighth victory of the season. Sophomore Jake Douglas was next, playing for the first time this year on court one against McIntosh. His 6-2, 6-3 victory today moved his career win percentage in singles to second in school history at .778, passing Alex Vlaski. The Huskies took the 4-0 victory to clinch the win on court five, with Sebastian Hawken picking up his seventh win of the year in a 7-5, 6-0 win over Moser.
Next to finish for the Dawgs was Piers Foley on court six, with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Patrik Pech, while No. 105 Mitch Stewart grabbed a 6-3, 6-2 win over Papic on court two. Junior Gal Hakak completed the sweep for the Huskies, forcing a tie-breaker after dropping the first set 6-4 by winning the second 6-2. He defeated Bugailiskis in a 10-7 tie-break for his seventh win on the year.
“It's a good start to the weekend and I'm looking forward to our match on Sunday against Pepperdine who is great,” said Anger. “Personally the guys are all talking about win 350 but I'm just thinking about 351.”
The Huskies will be back in action on Sunday when they face No. 52 Pepperdine at noon at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. You can keep up with the team on their website at GoHuskies.com, or on their social media pages on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.
